  • Sales tax (dealer purchases)
  • Use tax (private party & out-of-state)
  • Title fees
  • Registration fees
  • Electric vehicle surcharges

How the Illinois Used Car Tax Works

Illinois has different tax rules depending on how you buy the car.

1. Dealer Purchases (Used or New)

If you buy from a dealer:

  • You pay sales tax based on your county
  • Trade-ins are fully deductible (since 2022)

Example formula:

Taxable Amount = Purchase Price – Trade-In Value

This applies to both new and used vehicles

2. Private Party Used Car Tax (RUT-50)

If you buy from a private seller:

  • Illinois uses a sliding tax scale
  • Based on:
    • Vehicle age
    • Purchase price

For vehicles under $15,000:

  • As low as 1.5% for older vehicles
  • Up to 6.25% for newer vehicles

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of Illinois tax

3. Out-of-State Purchases

If you bought the car outside Illinois:

  • Illinois calculates full tax based on your county
  • Then subtracts any tax already paid
Use Tax Due = Illinois Tax – Tax Already Paid

The credit is capped — you won’t get a refund

Illinois Title and Registration Fees

No matter if the car is used or new, you’ll also pay:

  • Title Fee: $165
  • Registration Fee:
    • Passenger vehicle: $151
    • Motorcycle: $41
    • Trailer/commercial: weight-based

Additional possible fees:

  • EV surcharge ($70–$125)
  • Plate transfer fee ($25)
  • Dealer filing fee ($25)

Example (Used Car in Illinois)

Let’s say:

  • Purchase price: $20,000
  • Trade-in: $5,000
  • County: Cook

Result:

  • Taxable amount: $15,000
  • Estimated tax: ~$1,275
  • Fees: ~$300+

Total cost: ~$1,600+
