This Arkansas vehicle sales tax calculator estimates the bill people mean by “how much is sales tax on a car in Arkansas.” It is not one flat percent on every used car. New vehicles (and used vehicles at $10,000 or more) use state 6.5% — 7% if you are a Texarkana resident. A used car under $4,000 has no state sales tax. A used car from $4,000 to just under $10,000 uses statute 2.875% (DFA’s FAQ also prints 3.5% — verify at the Revenue Office). Local tax is based on residence and is capped at $25.00 for each 1% of local rate, so a 2% local line cannot exceed $50.00. On a $38,000 new car that is state $2,470.00 plus Little Rock local $53.13. Title is $10.00. Tags are a small weight fee, not a percent of price. Use the calculator on this page. The State Revenue Office sets the receipt. In this guide

Estimate your own deal: The Arkansas vehicle tax, title, and license calculator on this page is the same engine as the figures below. Verify rates in the Arkansas DFA vehicle tag / sales-tax materials, Ark. Code §26-52-324 and §26-52-510, and the DFA Local Tax Lookup. You title and register at a State Revenue Office — Arkansas does not run a separate “DMV” brand for this work.
How much is sales tax on a vehicle in Arkansas?
Short answer: On a new $38,000 car, state tax is $2,470.00 at 6.5% ($2,660.00 at 7% for a Texarkana resident). Local is extra but capped: Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski $53.13 (rate 2.125%, cap $53.13); Fayetteville City in Washington — Washington $81.25 (3.25%); Jonesboro City in Craighead — Craighead $50.00 (2%); Bentonville City in Benton — Benton $75.00 (3%). Combined tax in Little Rock: $2,523.13. Title $10.00 plus mid-weight tags $28.00 brings Little Rock cash TTL to $2,561.13.
“Vehicle sales tax calculator Arkansas,” “Arkansas car sales tax calculator,” “Arkansas auto sales tax calculator,” and “how to calculate sales tax on a car in Arkansas” are this state line plus the capped local line — not tags, and not county personal property tax.
| Residence (DFA city row) | Local rate | Local cap on this row | State + local on $38,000 new |
|---|---|---|---|
| State only (local 0% illustration) | 0% | $0.00 | $2,470.00 |
| Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski | 2.125% | $53.13 | $2,523.13 |
| North Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski | 3% | $75.00 | $2,545.00 |
| Fayetteville City in Washington — Washington | 3.25% | $81.25 | $2,551.25 |
| Jonesboro City in Craighead — Craighead | 2% | $50.00 | $2,520.00 |
| Bentonville City in Benton — Benton / Rogers City in Benton — Benton | 3% | $75.00 | $2,545.00 |
| Conway (city) City in Faulkner — Faulkner | 2.625% | $65.63 | $2,535.63 |
Example 1 — $38,000 new, no local
State rate: 6.5% Taxable price: $38,000 State sales/use: $2,470.00 Local: $0.00 Total tax: $2,470.00
Example 2 — Same car, Texarkana resident
Texarkana residents use 7% state, not 6.5%. State tax on $38,000 is $2,660.00 instead of $2,470.00. Turn on the Texarkana resident switch; do not assume the Miller County city row alone changes the state rate.
Do not apply 6.5% to every used car. Under $4,000 used: state $0.00. From $4,000 to $9,999.99: statute 2.875% → $215.63 on $7,500. At $10,000 and up, used vehicles return to full 6.5%.
Used-car tax: $0, 2.875%, or 6.5%
“Arkansas used car sales tax calculator,” “Arkansas sales tax on used cars,” and “used car sales tax Arkansas” are this three-band rule. The band is tested on the sales price before trade-in or 60-day sold credit (Ark. Code §26-52-324(c)). A $9,500 used car with a $6,000 trade is still in the special-rate band even though tax is computed on the $3,500 difference.
| Used selling price (before trade) | State rate this calculator uses | State tax on that price |
|---|---|---|
| Under $4,000 (example $3,500) | $0 state sales tax (DFA FAQ) | $0.00 |
| $4,000 to $9,999.99 (example $7,500) | 2.875% per §26-52-324 | $215.63 |
| $10,000 or more (example $12,000) | 6.5% (same as new) | $780.00 |
| $18,500 used (typical private sale) | 6.5% | $1,202.50 |
Example 1 — $3,500 used, 2% local still possible
State tax is $0.00. Local is not automatically wiped on this engine. At a 2% local rate the cap is $50.00, so local tax is $50.00 and combined tax is $50.00. Confirm local treatment at the Revenue Office.
Example 2 — $7,500 used (statute vs DFA FAQ)
This calculator uses the statute rate 2.875%: state tax $215.63. DFA’s public FAQ has also stated 3.5% for used vehicles from $4,000 to $9,999. If a clerk applies 3.5%, $7,500 would be $262.50, not $215.63. Bring both citations. The office receipt wins.
Official: Ark. Code §26-52-324 (special used rate 2.875%; threshold not reduced by trade-in); DFA vehicle sales-tax FAQ (used <$4,000 $0; FAQ 3.5% language); DFA Vehicle Tag Renewal (tax base includes rebate, freight, extra equipment; warranties taxable).
Local tax and the $25-per-1% cap
Local motor-vehicle tax follows where you live, not the dealer’s city. DFA’s rule is that each local tax will not exceed $25.00 for each 1% of tax due. A 2% local rate caps at $50.00. A 3.25% Fayetteville combined local caps at $81.25. Without the cap, 3.25% of $38,000 would be over $1,200. The cap is why “Arkansas sales tax calculator” results that treat local like grocery sales tax overstate the car bill.
| City row | Listed local % | Cap ($25 × points) | Local actually charged on $38,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski | 2.125% | $53.13 | $53.13 |
| Fayetteville City in Washington — Washington | 3.25% | $81.25 | $81.25 |
| Jonesboro City in Craighead — Craighead | 2% | $50.00 | $50.00 |
| Batesville City in Independence — Independence | 3.5% | $87.50 | $87.50 |
| Osceola City in Mississippi — Mississippi | 4.5% | $112.50 | $112.50 |
Example 1 — Little Rock vs Jonesboro local on $38,000
Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski local $53.13. Jonesboro City in Craighead — Craighead local $50.00. The gap is $3.13 — small, because both caps have already bitten. State tax is the same $2,470.00 in both cities.
Example 2 — Bentonville is not “Benton”
Bentonville City in Benton — Benton is 3%. Benton (city) in Saline County is a different DFA row. Washington (city) in Hempstead County is not Fayetteville. Always pick the city code, not a county nickname from Search Console.
A dealer in a cheaper city does not rewrite your local cap. If you live in Fayetteville and buy in Jonesboro, Fayetteville’s local row still applies. Source is residence.
Official: DFA Vehicle Tag Renewal — local tax based on residence; each local tax not to exceed $25 per 1% of tax due. Confirm the current city/county split in DFA’s Local Tax Lookup.
Tax vs title vs tags
“How much is tax title and license in Arkansas” and “tax title and license calculator Arkansas” add two small statewide lines after the tax:
- Sales/use tax — tiered state rate on delivery price (rebates, freight, extra equipment in; FET out; extended warranties taxable) plus capped local.
- Title — $10.00. Expedited title is an extra $10.00 at the Central Little Rock office (three business days) when you use that service.
- Tags / registration — passenger weight fee $17.00 / $25.00 / $30.00 plus validation decal $2.50 plus postage $0.50. Transferring an existing tag is $1.00 plus any weight-class difference. Lien filing $0.50.
Example 1 — State tax + title + mid-weight tags, 2% local
Tax $2,520.00 + title and tags $38.00 = cash $2,558.00.
Example 2 — Little Rock cash stack
Same $38,000 new car kept in Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski: $2,561.13 (tax $2,523.13 + title $10.00 + mid-weight tags $28.00).
Arkansas title fee and tag cost
Short answer: Title is $10.00. Mid-weight passenger tags (3,001–4,500 lb) are $25.00 + decal $2.50 + postage $0.50 = $28.00. Light (≤3,000 lb) uses $17.00; heavy (≥4,501 lb) uses $30.00. Tag transfer is $1.00, not a new full registration, plus any higher weight-class difference.
| DFA fee line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Title | $10.00 |
| Passenger ≤3,000 lb | $17.00 |
| Passenger 3,001–4,500 lb | $25.00 |
| Passenger ≥4,501 lb | $30.00 |
| Validation decal | $2.50 |
| Postage | $0.50 |
| Tag transfer | $1.00 |
| Lien filing | $0.50 |
You generally have 60 calendar days to register. DFA’s late stub on this engine is a 10% sales-tax penalty plus $3 per 10 days on registration (capped at a full year of registration). On a $38,000 deal with 2% local, 70 days late, the inflated state tax line is $2,717.00. Confirm current penalty math at the Revenue Office — do not treat that stub as a substitute for DFA’s counter.
Example 1 — “How much are tags in Arkansas?”
For a typical passenger car in the middle weight band, first-issue tags are $28.00, not a percent of the car. That is why “Arkansas vehicle registration fee calculator” and “Arkansas tag calculator” should not return 6.5% of price.
Example 2 — Transferring plates
If you already have Arkansas tags, transfer is $1.00 plus the difference if the new vehicle is in a higher weight class. This page does not invent other transfer add-ons.
Official: MyDMV fee schedule (title $10, lien $0.50, weight bands, decal $2.50, postage $0.50, tag transfer $1.00); DFA 60-day registration deadline and late-penalty description.
How to calculate sales tax on a car
- Decide new vs used. Used price (before trade) picks the $0 / 2.875% / 6.5% band.
- Build the taxable delivery price: selling price minus same-deal trade-in minus qualifying 60-day sold-vehicle credit, plus taxable extras and warranties. Manufacturer rebates stay in the base.
- Multiply by 6.5% (or 7% if you are a Texarkana resident), unless a used band zeros or lowers the state rate.
- Add local tax for your residence city/county, then apply the $25.00-per-1% cap.
- Add title $10.00 and the matching weight tags if you are registering.
Example 1 — $18,500 used, no trade, Jonesboro
Band: used ≥ $10,000 → 6.5% State tax: $1,202.50 Local (capped): $50.00 Combined tax: $1,252.50
Example 2 — $38,000 new, $8,000 trade, Little Rock
Taxable base: $30,000.00 State (6.5%): $1,950.00 Local cap still binds: $53.13 Combined tax: $2,003.13
The $10,000 used-band test would use $38,000, not $30,000 — this car is new, so the full new rate applies on the reduced base.
Trade-ins, rebates, and the 60-day sold credit
DFA taxes the difference after a trade-in credit. A vehicle you sold within 60 days before or after the purchase can also reduce the taxable amount when you have a proper bill of sale (year, make, VIN, price). Rebates, freight, and extra equipment stay in the delivery price. Extended warranties are taxable even when the vehicle itself is in a low used band.
Example 1 — $5,000 trade on a $38,000 new car, 2% local
Taxable $33,000.00. State $2,145.00. Local stays at the 2% cap $50.00.
Example 2 — $4,000 sold-within-60-days credit, no local
State tax falls from $2,470.00 to $2,210.00. Keep the bill of sale. This is not the same form as a dealer trade-in.
EV, hybrid, and PHEV registration add-ons
“Arkansas EV registration fee” is a registration add-on, not a second sales tax. MyDMV’s passenger schedule (prefer this over older $100 EV sheets) is hybrid $50.00, plug-in hybrid $100.00, and electric $200.00, on top of the ordinary weight fee and decal.
Example 1 — $38,000 EV, 2% local
Sales tax is unchanged: $2,520.00. Cash TTL with mid-weight tags plus the EV add-on: $2,758.00 versus gas $2,558.00.
Example 2 — Hybrid vs PHEV add-on only
HEV $50.00. PHEV $100.00. EV $200.00. Do not use a stale $100 EV figure if MyDMV lists $200.00.
Personal property tax is not sales tax
Queries like “does Arkansas have personal property tax on vehicles,” “where to find ad valorem tax on registration Arkansas,” and “how to assess vehicle in Arkansas” are a different bill. DFA expects the vehicle listed with the county assessor and personal property taxes current before you can register. This calculator does not invent millage or assessment dollars. Ask the county assessor. Sales/use tax above is paid at the Revenue Office on the purchase.
Military: Non-Arkansas home of record can be exempt from assessment and personal property taxes with a Leave and Earnings Statement. That is not an automatic sales-tax wipe. Arkansas home of record follows ordinary resident sales-tax rules.
What this page does not estimate
- Boats — “Arkansas boat sales tax” is a different DFA path. This page is on-highway cars.
- Bonded title — not a standard $10.00 transfer; use DFA’s bonded-title instructions.
- Title insurance — real-estate product, not a car title.
- Arkansas transfer tax calculator — usually real estate, not vehicle title $10.00.
- Motorcycles — different registration schedule.
- Inspections, dealer licenses, Form 10-381, auto loan APRs — out of scope.
- Gift / inheritance sales tax — not fully spelled out on the DFA FAQ pages used for this engine. Confirm at the State Revenue Office. Title $10.00 and tags still apply when you register.
How to use this calculator
- Stay on this URL: arkansas-vehicle-tax-title-license-calculator.
- Mark the vehicle new or used. Used price before trade picks the tax band.
- Enter residence city — Little Rock, Fayetteville, Jonesboro, Bentonville — not the dealer lot.
- If you live in Texarkana, turn on the Texarkana resident rate.
- Enter trade-in or 60-day sold credit if they qualify.
- Turn on title and registration when you want tags. Add EV/HEV/PHEV if that is the powertrain.
- Compare the estimate to the State Revenue Office. Local lookup and the used-rate FAQ/statute split are theirs to settle.
Two complete buying examples
Example 1 — $38,000 new gas car, Little Rock, mid weight, cash
Residence: Little Rock City in Pulaski — Pulaski State 6.5%: $2,470.00 Local 2.125% capped at $53.13: $53.13 Combined tax: $2,523.13 Title: $10.00 Mid-weight tags: $28.00 Cash TTL: $2,561.13
Example 2 — $7,500 used, Fayetteville, then a $18,500 used contrast
$7,500 used state (2.875%): $215.63 $7,500 local (capped): $81.25 $18,500 used state (6.5%): $1,202.50 $18,500 local (capped): $81.25 $18,500 combined tax: $1,283.75
The jump from $7,500 to $18,500 is not “more of the same percent.” Crossing $10,000 returns the used car to the full new-vehicle state rate.

Do I pay sales tax on a boat in Arkansas?
This page does not estimate boats. Ask DFA. The car rules above do not automatically copy onto a hull.
Does Arkansas have personal property tax on cars?
Assessment and personal property tax are a county-assessor process required to register. They are not the DFA sales/use line this calculator prints.
How long do I have to pay sales tax / register?
DFA’s registration window is 60 calendar days. Late math on this page is a stub (10% of state tax plus $3 per 10 days). Confirm at the Revenue Office.
Sales tax in Rogers / Jonesboro / Batesville / Osceola?
Use the city row. Rogers City in Benton — Benton local 3% (cap $75.00). Jonesboro City in Craighead — Craighead 2%. Batesville City in Independence — Independence 3.5%. Osceola City in Mississippi — Mississippi 4.5%. State tax on a new $38,000 car is still $2,470.00 in each of those cities.
What about “Arkansas DFA vehicle sales tax calculator” or “Arkansas DMV tax calculator”?
There is no separate DMV sales-tax widget that replaces DFA. This page is the VehicleTaxCalculator.com estimate using DFA rules. The office that prints the title is the State Revenue Office.
Before you sign

- Personal property tax is separate. Boats are separate.

This page estimates Arkansas passenger-vehicle sales/use tax (tiered state + capped local), title, and weight-based tags using the same engine as the calculator above (as-of 2026-09-05). Final amounts are set by the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration / State Revenue Office. Used $4,000–$9,999 may be assessed at 3.5% if the office follows DFA FAQ instead of §26-52-324. Gift, inheritance, boat, bonded-title, and county personal-property figures are out of scope or must be confirmed at the office. This is not legal, tax, or financing advice.
