How Alaska Local Vehicle Sales Tax Works by City and Borough: Complete Guide

Rates sourced from Alaska DMV and local city or borough finance offices and updated in real time

Alaska is the rare state with no statewide sales tax and no statewide vehicle sales tax. What you pay locally depends on the city or borough that actually levies a sales tax — and many places levy none. Anchorage is not Juneau. A borough areawide rate is not a small-city rate inside that borough. This guide compares the live municipal rates on the official rate data and leaves every listed community in the appendix. Right now the highest local sales-tax rate is 7% in Cordova, Unorganized Borough / Hoonah, Unorganized Borough / Klawock, Unorganized Borough / Kodiak, Kodiak Island Borough / Selawik, Unorganized Borough / Wrangell, City and Borough of Wrangell, and the lowest is 0% in Aleutians East Borough (Areawide) / Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage / Bristol Bay Borough / Cold Bay, Aleutians East Borough / Craig, Unorganized Borough / Denali Borough / Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough / Ketchikan, Ketchikan Gateway Borough / Matanuska-Susitna Borough / McGrath, Unorganized Borough / Northwest Arctic Borough / Nuiqsut, North Slope Borough / Port Lions, Kodiak Island Borough / Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula Borough / Sitka, City and Borough of Sitka / Skagway, Municipality of Skagway / Utqiagvik, North Slope Borough / Valdez, Unorganized Borough. Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage is 0%; Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau is 5%. If you live in Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage rather than Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau, the gap is 5%, or $1,600.00 on a $32,000 taxable purchase. This guide compares 104 localities. Rates are sourced from Alaska DMV and local city or borough finance offices and update in real time so a levy change cannot leave a stale percentage in the prose.

Why the locality on the title changes the bill

DMV title fees are statewide. Local sales tax is not. If you take delivery in a taxing city, that city’s ordinance controls. If you live in a borough that only taxes areawide, the city add-on may be zero. Seasonal winter/spring rates exist in some communities; the live primary field in this article is the general sales-tax rate on the official rate data.

Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage sits at 0% while Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough sits at 0%. If you live in Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage instead of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, that is 0% — $0.00 on a $32,000 taxable purchase. People move this gap around without meaning to: a dealer in a cheaper jurisdiction does not rewrite the sourcing rules. The live comparisons below use the same local sales tax field the calculator uses.

How this state taxes (or fees) a vehicle

The State of Alaska does not impose a sales tax. Municipalities (home-rule and general-law cities and boroughs) may levy sales taxes under Title 29 of the Alaska Statutes. Motor vehicle sales can be included, exempted, or capped depending on the local code — which is why you must read the city, not a state chart. This official rates is a rate table, not a substitute for a city’s exemption list. Title and registration still go through the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles.

Dealers in taxing cities collect local tax. Private-party buyers should ask the city clerk or borough finance office whether vehicles are in the tax base. Out-of-state purchases are a use-tax question for that municipality, not for Juneau’s state treasury.

Important: A 0 percent row means that community currently shows no general sales tax in the current official rates. It does not mean Alaska DMV charges nothing to title. It also does not guarantee the city exempts vehicles; confirm the ordinance if your deal is unusual (dealer vs private party, borough vs city).

Highest and lowest rates right now

Among localities currently loaded for Alaska, the maximum local sales-tax rate is 7% (Cordova, Unorganized Borough / Hoonah, Unorganized Borough / Klawock, Unorganized Borough / Kodiak, Kodiak Island Borough / Selawik, Unorganized Borough / Wrangell, City and Borough of Wrangell) and the minimum is 0% (Aleutians East Borough (Areawide) / Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage / Bristol Bay Borough / Cold Bay, Aleutians East Borough / Craig, Unorganized Borough / Denali Borough / Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough / Ketchikan, Ketchikan Gateway Borough / Matanuska-Susitna Borough / McGrath, Unorganized Borough / Northwest Arctic Borough / Nuiqsut, North Slope Borough / Port Lions, Kodiak Island Borough / Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula Borough / Sitka, City and Borough of Sitka / Skagway, Municipality of Skagway / Utqiagvik, North Slope Borough / Valdez, Unorganized Borough). Those names are live. If a district overtakes the leader next quarter, the sentence updates automatically. On a $48,000 taxable price, the high row is $3,360.00 and the low row is $0.00.

Treat a raw maximum with care when official tables include special districts, CID parcels, or vehicle types other than a passenger car. The regional sections below prefer ordinary cities and counties you would actually put on a title. The appendix remains the complete searchable list.

Two complete examples

These two walk-throughs use the same live rate as the regional boxes. They are not a substitute for a clerk’s calculator, but they show the arithmetic behind the live dollar figures.

Complete example A: $32,000 in Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage

Scenario: Taxable or assessed amount $32,000 in Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage.

Amount: $32,000
Local sales-tax rate 0%
Result: $0.00
Same amount in Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau (5%): $1,600.00
Gap: $1,600.00

This is the local (or combined) rate line only.

Complete example B: $48,000 in Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau

Scenario: Step the amount to $48,000 and keep the same two places.

Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau: $2,400.00
Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage: $0.00
Gap: $2,400.00

Percentage and millage gaps scale with the base. Flat-fee states in this series do not.

What these rates do not include

DMV title, registration, and the biennial registration tax are statewide schedules. Seasonal winter/spring rates appear separately in official tables and are not the default number woven through this essay unless a city is known for them.

Common questions

Does Anchorage charge a city sales tax on cars? Check the live Anchorage rate in this guide. Anchorage has historically relied on other local taxes; do not assume a rate from a Lower 48 habit. Use the live rate shown for Anchorage in this guide.

Why are village names on a vehicle article? Because those communities levy sales tax that can apply to taxable sales, and buyers move boats, ATVs, and used cars through the same clerks. The appendix is the full list.

Can I trust a screenshot of this article in six months? Trust the live rates on this page, not a PDF. Highest and lowest names update when official rates change.

What if a rate shows as unavailable? The locality name may not match official spelling. Search the appendix and use the official city or county label.

Does a dealer in the cheap locality save me money? Almost never, if sourcing follows residence or first use. Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage still pays 0% when that is where the vehicle belongs.

How these rates stay current

Every rate and dollar amount in this article is pulled live from current official data used by Alaska DMV and local city or borough finance offices. When an official levy changes, the figures on this page update in real time. Highest and lowest locality names also update automatically.

This is an educational estimator, not a clerk’s receipt. Effective dates, exemptions, trade-in rules, and assessment fractions can be more precise than a single combined rate. When you title, the state’s collecting office is the authority.

Conclusion

Alaska does not have one vehicle-tax number. Anchorage, Municipality of Anchorage is 0%; Juneau, City and Borough of Juneau is 5%; the live high is 7% and the live low is 0%. If you live in the high place, you feel it on a $32,000 taxable purchase; if you live in the low place, you still owe whatever statewide tax or fee the statutes below impose.
