Washington has no state income tax and a relatively high sales tax. The statewide rate plus local city, county, and transit (PTBA) add-ons produce a combined rate at the sourced address — and that is what you pay on a vehicle. Seattle is not unincorporated Spokane County. Tacoma is not a tribal compact row. This guide compares live combined sales-tax rates using the official exact location names. Right now the highest combined sales-tax rate is 10.7% in Edmonds, Snohomish / Lynnwood, Snohomish, and the lowest is 7.6% in Klickitat County Unincorp. Areas, Klickitat. Seattle is 10.55%; Bellevue is 10.3%. If you live in Seattle rather than Bellevue, the gap is 0.25%, or $80.00 on a $32,000 taxable purchase. This guide compares 407 localities. Rates are sourced from the Washington Department of Revenue and DOL and update in real time so a levy change cannot leave a stale percentage in the prose.
Why the locality on the title changes the bill
DOL collects sales tax on vehicle transfers based on the location code. A Vancouver (Clark County) resident does not get a rural eastern rate. Use “Spokane (City)” not a naive “Spokane” that might miss.
Seattle sits at 10.55% while Tacoma sits at 10.5%. If you live in Seattle instead of Tacoma, that is 0.05% — $16.00 on a $32,000 taxable purchase. People move this gap around without meaning to: a dealer in a cheaper jurisdiction does not rewrite the sourcing rules. The live comparisons below use the same combined sales tax field the calculator uses.
- Washington Department of Revenue — local sales-tax rate lookup; motor vehicles
- RCW 82.08 — retail sales tax
- RCW 82.14 — local retail sales and use tax
- Washington DOL — vehicle title and tax collection
How this state taxes (or fees) a vehicle
RCW 82.08 imposes the state retail sales tax; RCW 82.14 authorizes local sales taxes. Combined rates are published by the Department of Revenue. Motor vehicles are titled through DOL; tax is due on the selling price. This article’s live figures use the combined sales column. MVET (motor vehicle excise tax) appears as a separate field on some rows and is not the sales-tax live rates.
Dealers collect. Casual sales go through a vehicle licensing office. Out-of-state use tax is a DOR/DOL rule.
Highest and lowest rates right now
Among localities currently loaded for Washington, the maximum combined sales-tax rate is 10.7% (Edmonds, Snohomish / Lynnwood, Snohomish) and the minimum is 7.6% (Klickitat County Unincorp. Areas, Klickitat). Those names are live. If a district overtakes the leader next quarter, the sentence updates automatically. On a $50,000 taxable price, the high row is $5,350.00 and the low row is $3,800.00.
Treat a raw maximum with care when official tables include special districts, CID parcels, or vehicle types other than a passenger car. The regional sections below prefer ordinary cities and counties you would actually put on a title. The appendix remains the complete searchable list.
King County and Seattle
This cluster is where many readers actually live. Seattle is 10.55% in the current official rates. The comparisons that follow keep names in the sentence and live amounts in the same sentence.
If you live in Seattle rather than Bellevue, the combined sales-tax rate is 10.55% versus 10.3% — a gap of 0.25%. On a $32,000 taxable price that is $80.00.
A household deciding between Kirkland and Redmond is not deciding between identical local bills. Kirkland is 10.4%; Redmond is 10.4%. On $32,000 that is $3,328.00 versus $3,328.00, a cash gap of $0.00.
If you live in Renton rather than Kent, the combined sales-tax rate is 10.5% versus 10.4% — a gap of 0.1%. On a $32,000 taxable price that is $32.00.
From one end of this cluster to the other — Seattle versus Federal Way — the combined sales-tax rate runs 10.55% against 10.4%, a gap of 0.15% or $75.00 on $50,000.
Named in this section: Bellevue, Federal Way, Kent, Kirkland, Redmond, Renton, Seattle. Other rows that belong to the same counties still live in the appendix table.
Example 1: Seattle versus Bellevue
Scenario: Two buyers each pay $32,000 for the same used SUV. One titles in Seattle (10.55%); the other titles in Bellevue (10.3%).
Seattle combined sales-tax rate (10.55%): $3,376.00
Bellevue combined sales-tax rate (10.3%): $3,296.00
Gap if you live in Seattle rather than Bellevue: $80.00
The statewide pieces discussed above do not create this gap. The local combined sales tax does.
Example 2: A cheaper vehicle and a dearer one
Scenario: Same two places, but the car is only $4,500. Local tax still applies to the taxable price (there is no Florida-style $5,000 surtax cap in Washington unless a separate statute says otherwise).
$4,500 in Bellevue: $463.50
$50,000 in Seattle: $5,275.00
$50,000 in Bellevue: $5,150.00
Watch how the dollar gap grows with price when the levy is a percentage, and how it does not when a neighboring state uses a flat fee instead.
Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston
This cluster is where many readers actually live. Tacoma is 10.5% in the current official rates. The comparisons that follow keep names in the sentence and live amounts in the same sentence.

Two complete examples
These two walk-throughs use the same live rate as the regional boxes. They are not a substitute for a clerk’s calculator, but they show the arithmetic behind the live dollar figures.
Complete example A: $32,000 in Seattle
Scenario: Taxable or assessed amount $32,000 in Seattle.
Combined sales-tax rate 10.55%
Result: $3,376.00
Same amount in Bellevue (10.3%): $3,296.00
Gap: $80.00
This is the local (or combined) rate line only.
Complete example B: $50,000 in Bellevue
Scenario: Step the amount to $50,000 and keep the same two places.
Seattle: $5,275.00
Gap: $125.00
Percentage and millage gaps scale with the base. Flat-fee states in this series do not.
What these rates do not include
DOL title and plate fees, electric-vehicle additional fees, and MVET where levied are not included in these combined sales-tax comparisons featured here.
- Washington Department of Revenue — local sales-tax rate lookup; motor vehicles
- RCW 82.08 — retail sales tax
- RCW 82.14 — local retail sales and use tax
- Washington DOL — vehicle title and tax collection
Common questions
Is MVET included in the sales-tax live rates? No. Sales is the combined sales-tax column. MVET is separate if your locality has it.
Why isn’t there a plain “Spokane” location? The official rates distinguishes Spokane (City), Spokane Valley, and unincorporated PTBA/non-PTBA. Use the one that matches.
Can I trust a screenshot of this article in six months? Trust the live rates on this page, not a PDF. Highest and lowest names update when official rates change.
What if a rate shows as unavailable? The locality name may not match official spelling. Search the appendix and use the official city or county label.
Does a dealer in the cheap locality save me money? Almost never, if sourcing follows residence or first use. Seattle still pays 10.55% when that is where the vehicle belongs.
How these rates stay current
Every rate and dollar amount in this article is pulled live from current official data used by the Washington Department of Revenue and DOL. When an official levy changes, the figures on this page update in real time. Highest and lowest locality names also update automatically.
This is an educational estimator, not a clerk’s receipt. Effective dates, exemptions, trade-in rules, and assessment fractions can be more precise than a single combined rate. When you title, the state’s collecting office is the authority.

Conclusion
Washington does not have one vehicle-tax number. Seattle is 10.55%; Bellevue is 10.3%; the live high is 10.7% and the live low is 7.6%. If you live in the high place, you feel it on a $32,000 taxable purchase; if you live in the low place, you still owe whatever statewide tax or fee the statutes below impose. Walk the region that matches your address, then confirm the live row in the appendix before you sign.
