Wyoming Vehicle Tax Rates Change as Casper, Albany County See Tax Cuts and Goshen County Increases Rate

Vehicle buyers in several Wyoming communities will see changes to sales tax rates beginning July 1, 2026, following updates published by the Wyoming Department of Revenue. While buyers in Casper and Albany County will benefit from lower rates, purchasers in Goshen County will pay slightly more on qualifying vehicle purchases.

The July 2026 rate chart issued by the Wyoming Department of Revenue reflects three notable local changes affecting vehicle transactions and other taxable purchases across the state.

Casper Sales Tax Drops After Temporary SPEC Tax Ends

The most significant change affects Casper, where the temporary Specific Purpose Excise Tax (SPEC) has ended after reaching its funding goal.

As a result, the city’s combined sales and use tax rate decreases from 6% to 5%, reducing the amount buyers pay when purchasing vehicles and other taxable items.

For someone purchasing a $28,000 used truck in Casper:

  • Previous 6% tax: $1,680
  • New 5% tax: $1,400

That represents a $280 reduction in sales tax compared with the previous rate.

Albany County Rate Reduced to 5%

Vehicle buyers in Albany County also benefit from a lower sales tax rate beginning July 1.

The county’s combined sales tax rate decreases from 6% to 5%, according to both the Wyoming Department of Revenue rate chart and Albany County’s published tax information.

Although the lower rate is effective beginning July 1, Albany County notes that the rate is scheduled to increase again later in the year under a separate approved tax measure. Buyers completing vehicle purchases during this period should ensure dealers are using the correct effective date when calculating taxes.

Goshen County Buyers Will Pay Slightly More

Not every Wyoming community received a tax reduction.

The July rate chart shows Goshen County’s combined sales tax rate increasing from 5.00% to 5.25%, making it the only notable increase identified during Vehicle Tax Calculators’ review of the updated Wyoming rate tables.

For a vehicle purchased for $24,000:

  • Previous tax at 5.00%: $1,200
  • New tax at 5.25%: $1,260

That’s an additional $60 in sales tax.

Review of Wyoming Rate Tables

As part of its July 2026 update process, Vehicle Tax Calculators compared the latest Wyoming Department of Revenue rate chart against its previous calculator database.

The review identified:

  • Casper tax rate reduced from 6% to 5%
  • Albany County reduced from 6% to 5%
  • Goshen County increased from 5% to 5.25%

No other vehicle tax rate changes requiring calculator updates were identified during this review.

What Wyoming Buyers Should Know

Because Wyoming allows local sales tax rates to vary by jurisdiction, buyers should verify that the correct rate is being used for the address where the vehicle will be registered.

Even relatively small percentage changes can affect the final out-the-door cost of purchasing a vehicle, especially on higher-priced cars and trucks.

Dealers, lenders, registration services, and consumers should ensure their tax calculation software reflects the July 1, 2026 rate changes before completing transactions.
